It seems ever so quietly Skoda has slipped in the automatic variant of the Laura TSI. A casual browsing of the Skoda India website revealed that the TSi variant now gets the 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. This is some news as the Laura TSI till now only had the slick 6-speed manual on offer. It seems that the recent increase in diesel prices have made companies now concentrate more on their petrol models and the 7-speed DSG gearbox can only increase sales and widen the TSI fan base in India.
The Laura TSI has a sort of a loyal fan-following in India due to its fantastic engine and delivering proper driving thrills plus we also love this car as its probably the most fun-to-drive car under Rs 25 lakhs. Though enthusiasts would prefer the manual more, the automatic option would mean more convenience yet also delivering the thrills. It must be noted that the powerful 2.0 TDI variant gets the 6-speed DSG while the TSI gets a 7-speed one.

The 7-speed, DSG gearbox has Tiptronic manual gear changing. In comparison to the 6-speed DSG, there is no “wet” clutch in the new transmission – that is a clutch immersed in an oil bath – rather a “dry” clutch. That too is a world first for DSG technology. This and other engineering modifications led to significant improvements to the DSG’s efficiency. The result: Further reduced fuel consumption and emissions values. This means according to the Skoda website the efficiency of the TSI manual is 13.4 kmpl while the TSI AT gets 14.6 kmpl! Yes its more efficient than the manual variant. Plus it now also gets bigger wheels and tyres too!
The Laura TSI AT has a price of Rs 15.65 lakhs which is Rs 1 lakh more than the manual TSI.
