Talks of brand ‘Datsun’ being revived for India have been sporadic in the past few months. Whether the India-specific product would bear the Datsun logo is something we can’t comment on at the moment. However, Nissan Motor India has revealed that an indigenously developed family car could be a reality in the next 5 to 6 years. The car will be developed and built in India and is expected to cater to the ever growing mass market segment.Nissan Motor India is currently based out of Chennai and has plans to revamp their engineering team at the R&D facility in the near future. The addition of new engineers will facilitate the development of new products built specifically for India and also for the global market going forward. Datsun could be re-introduced to the world as a sub-brand of Nissan Motor Corporation aimed for the developing markets with focus on countries like India, Brazil, etc.At present the Renault-Nissan Technology and Business Centre in India employs 3,600 engineers, of which around 2000 people are working on projects for Nissan India. On a larger scale, the car maker also plans to link this facility to their global research centers. Nissan currently offers six models in India right from the Micra hatchback to the 370Z sports coupe. They recently launched the Evalia MPV in the market targeting brands like Mahindra and Toyota.
