I know the biggest thing is that you need a recall letter that shows that there are no current recalls on the vehicle being imported.

Plus you have to let US border customs know 4 days in advance before you will be bringing in the vehicle. This is really important they need to know before hand.

You would need temporary insurance ofcourse.

    There is 5 % GST. $100 for vehicles with air-conditioning. $206 RIV(Registrar) fee.

Excise Tax on Fuel inefficient Cars, station wagons, vans and sport utility vehicles (excludes pickup trucks):
Vehicle uses 13-14 litres per 100 km C$1000
Vehicle uses 14-15 litres per 100 km C$2000
Vehicle uses 15-16 litres per 100 km C$3000
Vehicle uses 16 or more litres per 100 km C$4000
MOST IMPORTANT THING is that YOU NEED A CREDIT CARD FOR PAYMENT. Canadian border agents dont accept cash or cheques. And be sure to call and let the US border agent know atleast 4 days before when you are coming.

That is all i can think of the top of my head. By the way what is the vehicle that your friend wants to import?

thats quite a good excise tax table..instead of basing it on the price of the car itself..they are basing it on the amount of fuel it consumes :)
