How do you check 'Shock Absorbers' to tell if they need service or replacement ?

u can hear them squeaking when going over a bump and the ride would be really bouncy. i dont think you can service shocks, most people just replace them. normally its about 50,000 km-75,000 km, but if you dont hear or notice them then just keep on driving!!

I think if you can push the car on standing and the car goes down easily means the shocks have lost their strength. Basic function of the Shock absorber is to make the time of IMPACT longer so you don't feel that much of the shock but in short intervals or not at all. Squeaking sound more refers to the Bushes I guess, they need to be replaced when you can hear squeak or Click while you pass the speed hump. |

well if it does go down easily, it means that the damper fluid is now not as compressible as it was or more probably the piston in the damper is worn out, coil overs are usually tempered so they'll probably outlast your car, the most telling sign of damper wear is that if you push down the end of the car, the body should return to its original position....if it wallows and keeps osciallating about its original position...u have a problem..!

hehe...yep in india..usually people find that out when they go on the highway with a lot of people...and when the car goes over a pothole...it keeps wallowing for the next two kilometers...and everybody in the car throws up by the side of the road.. ...nice way to find out that your car needs a suspension overhaul..!

also if you see your oil spilled on shocks that means their seals are not able to hold pressure and its time to replace the shock, In india , shocks are serviced too, they will replace the oil and change the seals . but always prefer to buy new shock from authroised seller only bcoz lots of shocks are just repaired older shocks. |

shocks are serviced...but you see once a shock is serviced it will never have the same mechanical accuracy it had when they were brand new, and this will reflect in its behavior under load...reconditioned shocks should only be bought for one reason alone...financial constraints! the shocks aren't serviced by an engineer but by a road side mechanic...who would gamble your life for a couple of hundred bucks..because suspension is a critical component of the car, and if it fails..it can have disastrous results..!
